Contactless Rotary Transmission: From Requirements to Integration

JINPAT is preparing to introduce a self-developed wireless slip ring that combines proprietary wireless transmission algorithms with radio-frequency technology.

For machine builders, the key question is how this new rotary interface fits into a specific equipment design. A useful evaluation begins with the application’s communication, installation and operating requirements.

Define the Transmission Requirements

Start by identifying what information needs to pass between the stationary and rotating parts of the equipment.

Document the required interfaces, movement profile and communication performance. The term “wireless” alone does not establish protocol compatibility, data rate or latency. These characteristics need to be checked against the product specifications.

A clear requirements list gives the engineering team a practical basis for assessing suitability.

Understand What the Contactless Approach Changes

A conventional electrical slip ring transfers power or signals through sliding electrical contacts. A contactless approach removes that physical contact from the relevant transmission path.

This eliminates the corresponding sliding-contact wear mechanism. It does not, however, make the entire rotating assembly maintenance-free.

Mounting hardware, external connections and other components still need to be assessed according to their design and operating conditions. Maintenance planning should therefore consider the complete assembly.

Review Installation Space and Power Separately

JINPAT describes the upcoming product as compact and modular. Integration will nevertheless depend on the final dimensions, mounting arrangement and surrounding equipment.

Engineers should review the available installation space, assembly access and environmental conditions before confirming a configuration.

The rotating side’s power supply also requires separate consideration. The current announcement does not confirm wireless power transfer. Applications requiring both communication and electrical power should specify these needs individually and confirm how each will be addressed.

Plan Validation Around the Actual Machine

Before integration into production equipment, the supplier and machine builder should agree on suitable acceptance criteria.

These may include communication performance under the intended operating conditions, mechanical fit and the equipment’s response to a communication interruption.

Specific ingress protection ratings, operating temperature ranges and conformity documentation should be verified from the relevant product records. General statements about quality do not establish these specifications.

Application testing provides the evidence needed to determine whether the proposed interface meets the machine’s requirements.

Prepare a Clear Application Brief

An enquiry that includes the interface list, installation drawing, movement profile, power requirements and operating environment provides a useful starting point for technical evaluation.

With these details, the discussion can focus on compatibility, integration constraints and the validation work required before adoption.
